Reutter and Porsche

Porsche contracted construction of bodies to various coachbuilders, the most common of which, Reutter Karosserie, was purchased by Porsche in 1963 or 1964. Prior to acquisition of Reutter, Porsche 356's built by Reutter carried a "Reutter" tag in the left side door jamb. Following acquisition, the tags were marked with "Porsche". Examples of each are shown below.

Reutter (left) and Porsche (right) tags, near the top of the aluminum hinge covers in the front of the left door jamb. "Kunstharzlack" is the paint code for the body color.

Another 356 enthusiast is trying to narrow down the gap to determine when the changeover from "Reutter" to "Porsche" occurred. At present, we have the following data points:

Highest "Reutter" serial number Lowest "Porsche" serial number
Coupe 129408 129979
Cabriolet 160239 160595

If your car has a Reutter tag with a number higher than the ones shown above, or a Porsche tag with a number lower than those shown above, please send your information to Bill Leavitt at: denizen224@home.com  Requests for confidentiality will be respected.
